Redditch was built up as a new town in the 1960s and 70s and the layout shows it. The housing is arranged in distinct neighbourhoods like Winyates, Matchborough and Church Hill, each with their own green areas and footpaths connecting them. The Kingfisher Shopping Centre sits at the heart of things and the Arrow Valley Country Park runs right through the middle of the town along the River Arrow. That river corridor is a draw for rats, giving them water, cover and a route through the built-up areas. Rat problems come up regularly along the river and in the estates closest to it, where the combination of green space and housing gives them everything they need.

The flat-roofed garages and maisonette blocks that were a feature of the new town design can be trouble spots for mice and rats, because the construction often has voids and service ducts that let them move through connected buildings. Mice get into these properties through the smallest of gaps around pipework and cabling and once they are in one unit they can reach several others. The older part of Redditch around the town centre predates the new town and has Victorian and Edwardian terraces that bring their own pest challenges, with cellars and cavity walls that are hard to seal completely.

Wasps nest in the roof spaces and wall cavities of houses across all the Redditch estates every summer and the amount of green space in the town means there is no shortage of foraging for them. Wasp removal calls pick up from June onwards. The retail and industrial areas around the Enfield and Lakeside developments see pigeon problems too, with the flat commercial roofs and loading bays giving birds shelter and nesting spots. Squirrels cause damage in the residential areas where mature trees overhang rooflines, gnawing through fascia boards and insulation once they get into a loft.
