Bolton is a large Lancashire town on the western edge of the Pennines, with a busy town centre and residential neighbourhoods spreading across the hills and valleys in every direction. The town was built on cotton and engineering and the Victorian terraces that housed those industries' workers still make up a huge amount of the housing across Halliwell, Astley Bridge, Great Lever and Farnworth. These terraced rows are the most common setting for mouse control work in Bolton. Shared walls and continuous roof voids let mice travel along entire rows and the old stone and brickwork has enough gaps around service entries, air bricks and ground-level pointing to give mice easy access. The inner-town terraces around Deane, Daubhill and Derby Street are where we see the highest volume of mouse calls.

The River Croal and its tributaries run through the valleys around Bolton and the Croal in particular passes through heavily built-up areas from Farnworth through Moses Gate Country Park and into the town centre. Rat activity follows these waterways closely. The overgrown banks, old industrial land alongside the river and the scrubby edges of derelict sites provide ideal cover for rats moving between the water and the residential streets above. The canal at the southern end of the borough, running through Little Lever and Kearsley, adds another waterway corridor. Drainage is a major factor in Bolton's rat problems too. Many of the terraces still sit on Victorian drains that have cracked or collapsed and rats use these damaged pipes to move from the sewer system directly under properties.

Bolton's town centre around the Market Place, Deansgate and the food quarter generates constant commercial pest control demand, with restaurants, takeaways and the indoor market all needing to keep on top of rodent control.
