Ely is a small Cambridgeshire city sitting on a low rise above the surrounding fenland, dominated by its magnificent cathedral which can be seen for miles across the flat landscape. The city has a compact centre of period buildings around the cathedral and the market square, with residential streets spreading out across the gentle hill and modern estates on the edges.
