Rugby is a Warwickshire town famous for the school where the sport was born, sitting on the River Avon in the flat Midlands countryside. The town has a proper centre with independent shops and a lively market and the housing ranges from Victorian terraces around the station and Lawrence Sheriff Street to large estates across Bilton, Hillmorton and Brownsover. The River Avon and the Oxford Canal both run through the town, creating water corridors that rats follow into the built-up area. The terraced streets with their back alleys and connected drains are where rat problems tend to come up most often and the canal towpath through Brownsover and Newbold is another route they use.

The food outlets along the High Street and Church Street generate waste that attracts mice and rats to the town centre. Mice are common in the older housing around the centre and in the Victorian streets, where worn brickwork and gaps around old window and door frames let them inside. The newer estates on the edges of town are generally better sealed, but mice still find ways in through air bricks and utility gaps. The large distribution warehouses and logistics parks that have grown up around the M6 junction and along the A5 also deal with rodent issues because of the volume of goods and packaging that passes through.

Wasps nest in the roof spaces and wall cavities of properties across Rugby every summer and the parks and open spaces like Caldecott Park and the Rugby School playing fields give them foraging ground. Fleas sometimes develop in homes with pets and the terraced housing with its carpeted rooms can harbour them if treatment is not thorough. Pigeons roost on the older commercial buildings in the town centre and on the warehouse roofs in the industrial areas.
