Farningham is a village in the DA4 postcode area in the Darent Valley south of Dartford. The River Darent flows through the village and the surrounding landscape is a mix of farmland and wooded slopes typical of this part of the North Downs. The village has a long history with buildings dating from the medieval period through to modern times. The river is a key factor in pest control here. Rats follow the Darent through the valley and properties near the water see regular activity. The combination of the river corridor and the old village drainage gives rats plenty of routes to move around and they appear in gardens and outbuildings throughout the year.

The older buildings in Farningham have traditional Kent construction with brick and flint walls that age over time. Mice find the gaps that develop in the mortar and use them to get inside. Some of the oldest properties in the village have very thick walls with rubble cores and the voids within these walls give mice space to nest without ever being seen. The surrounding farmland provides a permanent source of mice in the hedgerows and field edges and they move towards buildings when the weather turns cold.

Wasp nests are treated in the village every summer with old barns and roof spaces being the most common locations. The valley setting creates sheltered conditions that seem to suit wasps and nests here can grow large before being spotted. Squirrels are active in the woodland on the valley slopes and they venture into roof spaces of houses near the tree line. Farningham is a beautiful village but like anywhere in a rural river valley the setting brings pests closer to homes than most people expect.
