Hartley is a village in the DA3 postcode area in the rural belt between Dartford and Meopham in north-west Kent. The village has grown over the years from a small farming settlement to a larger residential community but it still retains its countryside character with farmland and woodland close by. The housing is a mix of older cottages near the church and along Ash Road and larger 1960s and 1970s estates that make up the bulk of the village. The proximity to farmland means rat activity is a regular issue. Rats move into the village from the surrounding fields and the allotments and larger gardens provide food and shelter that keeps them around.

Mouse problems are widespread in Hartley. The older cottages have traditional entry points where brickwork has aged and gaps have opened but the 1960s and 1970s houses also have their weaknesses. Cavity wall construction of that era uses airbricks that can crumble and the flat-roofed garage blocks and extensions that are common on these estates develop gaps where mice get in. The village is surrounded by enough green space that there is always a population of mice in the hedgerows and fields ready to move into the nearest building when conditions push them indoors.

Wasp nests are found every summer in the roof spaces and garden sheds across the village. The mix of building ages means nests turn up in a variety of locations from the old tiled roofs of the cottages to the flat-roofed garages on the estates. Squirrels cause problems in properties near the woods and the mature garden trees that many houses in Hartley enjoy.
