Istead Rise is a residential area in the DA13 postcode between Meopham and Gravesend. The development grew up in the 1960s and 1970s on former farmland and the housing is mostly made up of detached and semi-detached houses from that era. The area sits on high ground with views across the surrounding countryside and while it has a suburban layout it is bordered by farmland on several sides. This position on the edge of open country means pest activity is a regular feature. Mice from the surrounding fields move into homes during the colder months. The 1960s and 1970s cavity wall construction has aging airbricks and gaps around where services enter the buildings and these are the main entry points mice use.

Rat activity follows the field boundaries and garden edges where the residential area meets the farmland. Wasp nests are common across Istead Rise during the summer. The flat-roofed garage blocks and garden sheds that are typical of the 1960s and 1970s estates provide plenty of nesting spots and the roof spaces of the houses themselves are equally popular with wasps. The gardens here tend to be long-standing with mature hedges and trees and squirrels take advantage of these to access roof spaces.
