Shorne Ridgeway is a small residential area along the ridge road that runs above Shorne village and Shorne Country Park in the borough of Gravesham. The houses here sit on the higher ground of the North Downs chalk ridge, with views over the Thames marshes to the north and the wooded valley to the south. It is a semi-rural setting, with homes spaced along the Ridgeway road between stretches of mature trees and hedgerow. The surrounding woodland, including Shorne Wood and the country park, is home to large numbers of grey squirrels and loft infestations are one of the most common pest issues for homes along this stretch. Squirrels get in through gaps at the roofline, beneath tiles and where fascia boards have pulled away from the brickwork.

The elevated position and the surrounding countryside also mean that field mice and wood mice are a constant presence. They move into homes from the surrounding hedgerows and woodland as autumn arrives and mouse control is a seasonal pattern that repeats every year. The older houses along the Ridgeway have traditional construction with enough gaps and cracks to make entry easy, while even the better-sealed modern properties are not immune when there is this much woodland around them.

Brown rats are present along the field boundaries and in the rougher ground near farm buildings in the area. Rat activity is less common up on the ridge than it is in the lower-lying areas near the marshes, but it does occur and properties with large gardens, compost heaps or bird feeding stations can attract rats from the surrounding land.
