Pest Control in Matlock

Matlock is a town in the Derwent valley in Derbyshire, built into the steep hillsides of the limestone gorge with the River Derwent flowing through the bottom. The town has a dramatic setting, with Victorian buildings from its heyday as a spa town climbing up the slopes towards Matlock Bath, Riber and the Heights of Abraham. This riverside location is the main factor in the town's pest picture. Rats follow the Derwent through the gorge and into the streets of Matlock and the properties closest to the river in the valley bottom see the highest levels of activity. We carry out rat control along the river corridor and through the older streets of the town throughout the year.

The Victorian and older stone-built houses that make up much of Matlock have the kind of features that attract pests. Cellars, stone walls with gaps in the mortar and timber floors create entry points for both rats and mice. Mouse control is a regular part of our work in Matlock, with mice getting into the stone terraces through the small openings that develop as the limestone mortar weathers. The steep hillside means some houses are built into the slope with retaining walls and split levels that create voids where mice and rats can shelter unseen.

Grey squirrels are common in the woodland along the gorge sides and properties near the treeline at Riber and on the Heights see regular squirrel visits to their loft spaces. Wasp nests turn up in the stone roof spaces and garden outbuildings across the town each summer and the crevices in the limestone cliffs around Matlock Bath also provide nesting spots for wasps and other insects.
