Stanley is a former mining town in north-west County Durham, sitting on the exposed hilltop between the valleys of the River Wear and the Team. The town grew around the coal industry and the landscape still carries the marks of that history in the form of reclaimed pit sites, former railway lines turned into footpaths and the terraced housing that was built for mining communities. The Front Street area and the terraced rows along the main roads through Annfield Plain, Catchgate and South Moor form the bulk of the older housing and these properties have the shared walls, connected lofts and suspended timber floors that make them easy for mice to navigate.
