Brierley Hill sits in the heart of the Black Country, a town built on industry where glassmaking and steelworks once dominated and where the Dudley Canal still winds through the centre. The Merry Hill shopping centre brought modern retail to the area, but the surrounding streets are still a mix of Victorian terraces, inter-war council housing and newer estates. That variety of housing creates different pest problems in different parts of town. The commercial areas around Merry Hill and the industrial estates along the canal also generate calls for cockroaches and flea treatments, with fleas often coming in on foxes that den in the scrubby land between housing and the canal.
