Waltham Abbey is an Essex town steeped in history, built around the medieval abbey that gives it its name and sitting right on the edge of the Lee Valley and Epping Forest. The town has an attractive old centre with period buildings, a busy high street and residential streets that range from Victorian cottages to modern estates. The Lee Valley and its waterways run along the western edge of town and these marshes and channels are a perfect environment for rats. The reed beds, river banks and waterlogged ground give them cover and water and they move into the town from the valley floor. Rat activity is at its highest in the streets closest to the river and around the Cornmill Meadows area, but problems spread further during the wetter months.

Epping Forest borders the town to the east and the woodland brings its own pest pressures. Grey squirrels are everywhere in the forest and they readily move into the loft spaces of houses along the forest edge. Squirrel removal is a regular job in the streets around Honey Lane and the properties backing onto the forest. The trees also support large numbers of birds and pigeon roosting on commercial buildings in the town centre is an ongoing issue. The older properties in the town have the usual vulnerabilities to mice, with gaps around pipes, aging mortar and loose air bricks all providing entry points.

Mouse control across Waltham Abbey keeps us busy year-round, with a noticeable peak from autumn onwards as the cold drives them indoors. The modern estates around the edges of town are not immune either, as mice find gaps around utility entries and where cavity wall insulation has not been fitted tightly. Wasps nest in the roof spaces of both old and new houses and wasp removal runs through the whole summer season. The combination of water, woodland and varied housing makes Waltham Abbey one of those places where.
