Wigston is a town on the southern edge of Leicester, effectively joined to the city but keeping its own identity and town centre. The streets around Bell Street and Long Street have a mix of Victorian and Edwardian buildings, while the wider residential areas are mainly inter-war and post-war housing. The terraced streets near the centre are where we see the most mouse activity. Shared walls and connected roof voids let mice move between properties and the older drains under these streets give rats access from the sewer system. The Grand Union Canal runs along the western side of Wigston and the canal banks support rats that spread into the nearby residential areas. The Oadby and Wigston green spaces, including Brocks Hill Country Park, also provide habitat for rats, foxes and squirrels that move between the parks and the back gardens of neighbouring houses. Wigston has grown outwards with newer housing estates at Wigston Harcourt and towards Kilby Bridge and these areas see mice too, mainly field mice coming in from the farmland around the fringes.
