Pest Control in Arthog
Arthog is a small village on the southern shore of the Mawddach Estuary in Gwynedd, sitting between Dolgellau and Barmouth at the foot of Cadair Idris. The village is spread along the road above the estuary, with stone cottages and a handful of newer houses looking out across the water to the mountains beyond. It is a beautiful but exposed spot and the combination of estuary, woodland and wet mountain weather creates conditions that favour pests. Rats are found along the estuary shoreline and the streams that flow down from Cadair Idris and they move between the waterside and the houses in the village. We handle rat control calls from Arthog as part of our work across the Mawddach area.
Mice are a year-round problem in the stone cottages that make up most of the village. The thick stone walls are full of voids and mice nest inside them and move through the building out of sight. The damp climate means mortar can deteriorate faster than in drier parts of the country, creating gaps that mice and insects exploit. Mouse control in old stone cottages needs a careful approach because the buildings often cannot be sealed in the same way as a modern house. Treatment has to be thorough and follow-up checks are important.
The woodland around Arthog supports squirrels and other wildlife and the damp conditions bring cluster flies, woodlice and silverfish into homes during the cooler months. Wasps nest in stone walls and outbuildings through the summer. Arthog is a tiny village but the combination of estuary, mountain and older buildings means pest problems do arise and when they do we can get to the area quickly as part of our regular rounds through this part of Gwynedd.
