Mansfield is a former mining and textile town in north Nottinghamshire, sitting in the valley of the River Maun with Sherwood Forest country to the north and east. The town has a real mix of housing, from the old stone terraces around the market place to the large council estates built in the 1950s and 60s at places like Ladybrook, Bull Farm and Oak Tree. This variety means the pest problems we deal with here are just as mixed. The older terraces in the town centre share drainage systems that were laid down well over a century ago and these ageing sewers are a highway for rats to travel unseen between properties. The housing estates further out from the centre were built with cavity walls and suspended floors and both of these features give mice easy routes into homes. The green corridors that run between the estates along the River Maun and Vicar Water provide cover for rats and mice to move between the countryside and built-up areas and properties backing onto these strips of green tend to see more rodent activity than those further in.

Mansfield's commercial centre around the Four Seasons Shopping Centre and Stockwell Gate generates food waste that supports both rats and gulls. The flat-roofed buildings in the town centre attract nesting gulls each spring and their mess and noise causes problems for shopkeepers and residents alike. Wasp nests are another common call from across the town during summer, turning up in roof spaces, garden sheds and even underground in old rabbit burrows on the grassy banks around the estates.
