Corby grew rapidly from a small Northamptonshire village into a steelworks town in the mid twentieth century and the housing reflects that history. Large council estates from the 1950s and 1960s sit alongside newer private developments that have sprung up since the steel industry declined and the town reinvented itself. The older estates, with their flat-roofed garages, concrete paths and aging drainage, present the most pest challenges. Rats thrive where drains are old and cracked and the network of alleyways and shared green spaces across estates like Kingswood and Danesholme creates routes for them to move between properties. We deal with rat problems across Corby year round, but the estates closest to the town centre and the older parts of the drainage system keep us busiest.

The town is also surrounded by a ring of former quarry sites, country parks and reclaimed land. East Carlton Country Park, Weldon and the old quarries to the north have all been turned into green spaces and while they are great for the town, they also harbour wildlife that spills into nearby housing. Mice come in from the field edges and woodland margins and properties on the outskirts of town are most affected. Mouse control calls peak in autumn as temperatures drop. Bed bugs are another issue we see in Corby, often in the flats and shared accommodation closer to the town centre, where frequent changes of occupant make it easier for bed bugs to take hold.

Wasp nests are common during summer across all types of housing in Corby. The flat roofs on many of the older garages and outbuildings are a favourite nesting spot and we also find them in wall cavities, under soffits and in the ground along the paths between houses.
