Towcester is one of the oldest towns in England, sitting on the Roman Watling Street in south Northamptonshire. The town centre along the High Street has a lovely mix of Georgian and older stone buildings, many of which have cellars and outbuildings that have been in continuous use for centuries. These older structures with their thick stone walls and flag floors develop gaps and cracks over time and mice find their way in through openings that are almost impossible to spot from outside. The old coaching inns and converted workshops along the High Street can be particularly tricky because the buildings have been altered and extended so many times that there are hidden voids and spaces behind walls and under floors.

The River Tove runs through the south side of Towcester and joins the Great Ouse system downstream and this watercourse brings rats into the heart of the town. Properties along Moat Lane and the streets near the river see the most rat activity, with the animals moving between the waterside cover and nearby gardens and outbuildings. The allotments and green spaces around the river corridor give rats shelter and food and when water levels rise after heavy rain the rats are pushed up into the town.

Towcester has grown a lot recently, with large new housing estates at Towcester Vale to the south changing the character of the town. These new-build properties on former farmland go through a settling-in period where rodents disturbed by the construction look for new territory and the fresh landscaping and young gardens offer little resistance. Wasp nests are common across both the old town and the new estates through summer and the warm south-facing stone walls of the Georgian buildings along the High Street are favourite spots for queen wasps looking to start a colony in spring.
