Dorking is a market town at the foot of the North Downs in Surrey, sitting in the gap carved by the River Mole between Box Hill and Leith Hill. The town has a handsome high street of period buildings, Victorian and Edwardian residential streets climbing the surrounding hills and newer developments on the outskirts. The landscape around Dorking is steep, wooded and green and the river running through the centre brings pest pressures from several directions. Rats follow the Mole and its tributary streams, nesting in the banks and moving through the drainage system into the town. Properties near the river and along the older streets with their Victorian drains are most at risk of rat problems and we deal with calls from both residential and commercial premises across the town.

Mice are common in the older housing that makes up much of Dorking. The Victorian and Edwardian houses have cavity walls, suspended floors and aging brickwork that provides mice with entry points and the proximity of the downs and the surrounding countryside means there is always a supply of field mice ready to move indoors when the weather turns. Mouse control is our most frequent call from the town and it peaks from September through to March. The heavily wooded hills around Dorking support a large grey squirrel population and squirrel damage to loft insulation and electrical wiring is something we see regularly in properties close to the woodland.

Wasp nests are common during summer, particularly along the south-facing slopes of the downs where the warm chalk soils suit ground-nesting wasps. We also treat nests in loft spaces, garden sheds and under the eaves of houses across the town.
