Sheffield is a city built on seven hills where five rivers meet and that geography has a direct effect on pest activity. The Don, the Sheaf, the Porter, the Rivelin and the Loxley all flow through the built-up area and their valleys create green corridors that rats follow right into the heart of the city. The steel industry that made Sheffield famous has left behind canalside areas, old works and brownfield land that still supports large rodent numbers. The terraced streets of Burngreave, Heeley, Walkley and the inner suburbs have back alleys, cellars and old drains that rats use to move between properties and the density of food outlets in the city centre and along Ecclesall Road and London Road keeps them well supplied.
