Kidbrooke is a residential area in the SE postcode of south-east London, sitting between Blackheath and Eltham. The area has undergone massive change in recent years with the Kidbrooke Village development replacing the old Ferrier Estate, but it retains a mix of inter-war houses, post-war blocks and the striking new build apartments. The Kid Brook runs through the area and gives it its name and this watercourse is a factor in rat activity. Brown rats follow the brook and the drainage systems and the construction work in the area in recent years has disrupted rodent habitats, pushing them into the surrounding residential streets.

The mix of building types in Kidbrooke creates a range of pest challenges. The inter-war houses have air bricks, cavity walls and gaps that have developed over decades, giving mice established routes inside. The new build apartments are tighter but not immune, with service risers, bin stores and underground car parks creating their own pest pathways. The proximity to Sutcliffe Park and the green corridor along the brook provides habitat for rodents and other wildlife that then interacts with the residential area. Blackheath and its rough grassland also contribute to the pest pressure on the western side.

Wasp nests are common through summer in the lofts of the older houses and in the landscaped areas of the newer developments. Grey squirrels from Sutcliffe Park and the trees along the railway embankments get into the roof spaces of older properties. Fleas turn up in homes with pets across the area. Kidbrooke is a neighbourhood in transition, with the old and the new sitting side by side and the pest control challenges reflect both the legacy of the older housing and the realities of large-scale regeneration.
