Southwark is one of the most densely built parts of inner London, stretching south from the Thames along Borough High Street and out through Elephant and Castle, Walworth and Bermondsey. The area is a patchwork of older terraces, council estates, converted warehouses and new-build apartments, often sitting side by side. That mix of building types and the sheer density of people living and working close together creates strong pest pressure. Rats are a constant in Southwark, moving through the ageing Victorian sewer network, along railway embankments and through the basement areas of older commercial buildings. The streets around Borough Market are a particular hotspot, where the volume of food waste from restaurants, market traders and shops provides everything a rat colony needs.

Mice are just as embedded in Southwark as the rats. The older terraced housing in streets off Walworth Road and through the backstreets of Bermondsey has all the gaps and cracks that mice need to get inside and the converted warehouse flats near the river often have service voids and cavities that give them routes through entire buildings. Even the newer apartment blocks are not immune if bin stores attract activity or ground-floor retail units leave doors open. The estates around Elephant and Castle, many of which are being redeveloped, can see pest activity increase during building works as demolition disturbs existing rat runs and pushes them into neighbouring properties.

Along the riverside from Bankside to London Bridge, seagulls have made themselves at home on the flat roofs of offices and apartment buildings. They nest above the tourist areas around the Tate Modern and the Globe Theatre, scavenging from bins and outdoor eating areas. Wasp nests also turn up in surprising numbers in a built-up area like this, tucked into wall cavities, behind fascia boards and in the roof spaces of older buildings right across the borough.
