Slough is one of the biggest towns in Berkshire, sitting on the M4 corridor between London and Reading. The town has a massive trading estate that was once the largest in Europe, a busy High Street and a diverse population that gives it a vibrant, cosmopolitan energy. The housing ranges from Victorian terraces near the centre to 1930s semis in Langley and Cippenham and newer developments around the town. The density of food businesses along the High Street and Farnham Road creates a constant supply of waste that attracts rats and mice. The older drains beneath the Victorian streets are often in poor condition, giving rats underground routes through the centre. The Jubilee River and the old course of the Thames at Eton also provide water corridors where rats thrive.

The Victorian and Edwardian terraces in the inner areas see mouse problems regularly, with worn brickwork, gaps around old sash windows and shared walls all providing entry points. Many of these houses have been converted into multi-occupancy properties and the higher density means more food waste and more gaps in the building fabric. The newer housing is better sealed, but no property is completely mouse-proof when there is food available nearby. The trading estate and the industrial areas around the M4 junction deal with their own rodent challenges because of the volume of goods and packaging stored there.

Wasps nest in the roof spaces and wall cavities of properties across Slough each summer and the parks like Salt Hill Park and Upton Court Park provide foraging. Bed bugs are a recurring issue in some of the multi-occupancy housing and in the hotels near the trading estate and the M4. The transient nature of some of the accommodation and the density of the housing mean bed bugs can spread between properties through shared walls and corridors. Pigeons roost on the commercial buildings in the town centre and on the flat roofs of the trading estate units.
