Clapham Common is the large green space at the heart of Clapham, but it also refers to the residential streets that ring the park on all sides. The grand Victorian and Edwardian houses facing the Common are some of the most desirable addresses in south London, many of them converted into flats, with mansion blocks, mews houses and period terraces filling the streets behind. The Common itself covers over 200 acres of grassland, woodland and ponds and it acts as a wildlife reservoir that supports pests in the surrounding streets. Squirrels from the Common's trees get into the lofts of properties all around the perimeter and foxes that den in the scrubby areas of the park range through the residential gardens at night. Rats follow the drainage and the green edges of the park and properties facing the Common or with gardens that back onto it see the most activity. Mice are extremely common in the period properties that surround the park. The converted townhouses have multiple flats sharing walls, floors and ceilings and mice travel through the gaps around pipes, behind skirting boards and along cable runs. Wasps nest in the ornate eaves and roof voids of the grander houses and the range of sheltered spots in the period architecture gives queen wasps plenty of options. The ponds on the Common attract insects and the mature trees support a large squirrel population year-round. The combination of a major green space and some of south London's most densely converted housing creates a pest environment that needs constant attention.
