West Hill is the road and surrounding area climbing from Wandsworth town centre up to Putney Heath and Wimbledon Common, one of south-west London's most desirable residential streets. The houses are large Victorian and Edwardian villas, many set back behind mature front gardens with hedges and established planting. These substantial properties have the character that comes with age, but they also have the pest vulnerabilities. Mice find entry through the many small gaps that develop in buildings over more than a century: around pipe entries, through sub-floor voids and along the routes created when houses have been extended or converted. The size of these houses means mice can be active in one part of the building without anyone in another part being aware.

The green setting is central to life on West Hill. Putney Heath and Wimbledon Common border the area at the top of the hill and the mature trees and gardens along the road provide a green corridor that supports plenty of wildlife. Grey squirrels are a regular problem, using the trees to access rooftops and then gnawing their way into loft spaces. Rats are present around the common and along the vegetated slopes and they move into gardens and outbuildings of properties backing onto the green space.

Wasps nest in the chimneys, roof voids and behind fascia boards of these imposing buildings and a nest in a property this size can grow substantially before it is discovered.
