Pest Control in Yarm

Yarm is a handsome market town on a dramatic meander of the River Tees, its long High Street curving along the peninsula created by the river's tight loop. The town has Georgian coaching inns, Victorian shop fronts and a fine medieval stone viaduct that spans the valley. Yarm's High Street is one of the most attractive in the northeast, lined with period buildings that now house restaurants, independent shops and residential properties. Beyond the town centre, newer housing estates extend to the south and east, while the river wraps around three sides creating a natural boundary that also has a direct bearing on pest activity.

Being almost entirely surrounded by the River Tees means that rat pressure in Yarm is consistently high. Brown rats are natural waterside animals and the Tees provides everything they need: water, bankside cover and a constant supply of food from the surrounding area. Properties on the edge of the meander, where gardens back onto the riverbank, are most exposed to rat activity. Rats move up from the river through garden vegetation, under decking and along fence lines before looking for entry points into buildings. The older properties along the High Street, with their cellars and period construction, are also vulnerable because ageing brickwork and pointing develop gaps over time. Mice take advantage of these same weaknesses and are a common problem in both the older town centre buildings and the newer estates.

Yarm's riverside location also means that damp conditions at ground level can encourage insect activity and flea problems are common in homes where pets walk along the river path. In summer, wasp nests appear in the lofts and outbuildings of properties across the town. The town centre sees occasional pigeon issues on commercial buildings.
