Hill End is a small area on the edge of the UB postcode between Harefield and Ruislip in the London Borough of Hillingdon. The area sits close to the Colne Valley with its mix of lakes, rivers and green space and the housing is mainly residential with a suburban feel. The proximity to the Colne Valley Park is the biggest factor in pest activity here. Brown rats live along the waterways, around the gravel pit lakes and in the rough ground on the valley edge and from there they move into the nearest gardens and outbuildings. Any property with a garden backing onto green space or open land is more likely to see rat activity than one surrounded by other houses.

The housing in Hill End is mostly post-war, with semis and terraced properties that have been standing long enough to develop the gaps that mice take advantage of. Air bricks that have lost their mesh, gaps under doors and openings around service pipes are the usual entry points. Mice settle in wall cavities and under floor voids, breeding in the quiet spaces where they are hard to spot. The green corridors connecting the Colne Valley to the residential streets provide routes for rodents to move between open land and the built-up area without crossing open ground.

Wasp nests are a regular summer problem in the lofts and garden sheds around Hill End and ground-nesting wasps also turn up in the softer ground near the valley edge. Grey squirrels travel through the tree canopy from the valley woods into gardens and onto roofs and once they find a way into a loft space they cause damage quickly. Hill End is a quiet corner of outer London, but the Colne Valley on its doorstep means wildlife is always close and the pest issues that come with green space are a constant presence.
