Perivale is a compact suburb in the London Borough of Ealing, wedged between the A40 Western Avenue and the Grand Union Canal. The famous Hoover Building on the Western Avenue is probably the best-known landmark, but the rest of Perivale is made up of quiet 1930s housing estates and some industrial units along the canal. The Grand Union Canal is the main pest corridor in the area. Rats live along the towpath and in the bankside vegetation and they follow the canal into the residential streets, using drain lines and overgrown garden boundaries as routes. Properties along Horsenden Lane and the streets backing onto the canal tend to see the most rat activity, particularly during the colder months when the rats are looking for food and shelter near buildings.

Horsenden Hill borders Perivale to the north, providing one of the largest areas of open countryside in this part of London. The hill is wonderful for walkers, but it also supports a wildlife population that includes grey squirrels and field mice. Both species spread into the neighbouring houses, with squirrels causing damage in loft spaces and mice finding ways into the ground floors of the 1930s semis through the standard weak points: airbricks, weep holes and gaps around pipes. Mouse calls from Perivale follow the usual seasonal pattern, peaking from October through to March.

The industrial and retail units along the Western Avenue and Alperton Lane create food waste that feeds both rats and mice and the proximity of the canal means there is always a route connecting the commercial areas to the residential streets. Wasp nests are common across Perivale in summer, appearing in the roof spaces and wall cavities of the inter-war houses. The combination of canal, green hill and commercial strip makes Perivale a busier area for pest work than its small size might suggest.
