South Acton is a residential area in the London Borough of Ealing, defined in large part by the South Acton estate, one of the largest housing estates in west London. The estate is currently undergoing a major regeneration programme, with the old tower blocks and low-rise flats being replaced by new mixed-tenure housing. During this transition, pest pressures can increase. Demolition and construction work disturbs rat burrows and forces rats to relocate, often into the occupied buildings nearby. The older blocks that are still standing have communal bin stores, service risers and refuse chute systems that can give both rats and mice access to multiple floors. Managing pests in a building that is partially occupied while the one next door is being demolished is one of the more challenging situations we deal with.

Beyond the estate, South Acton has streets of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, particularly around Bollo Lane and the roads leading towards Chiswick Park. These older houses are where mouse problems are most common in the traditional sense: mice entering through airbricks, gaps in old brickwork and the spaces around pipe entries. Many of these houses have been converted into flats and the shared walls and subdivided layouts create internal routes that mice use to move between units. The streets near the railway lines also see rat activity, with the track embankments providing cover and the litter around stations providing food.

South Acton Park provides some green space in an otherwise densely built area and the park edges are where squirrels sometimes find their way into nearby houses. Wasp nests turn up across both the older terraces and the newer buildings during summer. The regeneration of the South Acton estate will eventually deliver better-sealed, modern housing, but in the meantime the mix of old and new, occupied and under construction, creates a pest control environment that needs careful and ongoing management.
