West Kensington is a densely built residential area in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, stretching between Olympia and Earl's Court. The housing is almost entirely Victorian, with rows of tall terraced houses lining the streets around North End Road and the roads leading towards Baron's Court. Most of these large houses have been divided into flats and this conversion is at the root of many of the pest problems we deal with here. Mice move through the gaps and voids created when a single house is split into multiple units. Shared risers, gaps between partition walls and the original building fabric all provide routes and a mouse problem in one flat often turns out to involve the whole building.

North End Road market runs through the area and the commercial strip of food shops, cafes and market stalls along this road generates waste that feeds a local rat population. The bins and service areas behind the shops are where rats are most visible, but they spread into the residential streets through the drainage network. The Victorian sewers beneath West Kensington are old and in many cases deteriorating and cracked pipes give rats a direct route from the main sewer into the basement levels of properties. Basement flats, which are common in this area, are particularly vulnerable to sewer rats.

The Earl's Court exhibition centre site on the eastern edge of West Kensington has been a major development site and the disruption of demolition and construction can push rats into neighbouring areas. Bed bugs are part of the regular workload here, given the high proportion of rental flats and the proximity to the Earl's Court hotel district. Wasp nests appear in the Victorian rooflines during summer, tucked behind fascia boards and in the ornate brickwork of the terraces. West Kensington is a dense and busy neighbourhood and its Victorian bones mean pest control is always going to be part of the picture.
