Scarborough is the classic English seaside town, built across two bays with the castle headland between them and the harbour tucked underneath. The town has a dramatic setting, rising steeply from the seafront up through the older streets towards the residential areas above. The South Bay and North Bay have very different characters, but both share the same pest challenges that come with a coastal town. Rats are a long-standing issue in the harbour area and along the seafront, where the fish processing, restaurants and takeaways provide a constant food supply. The old town around the castle and the steep streets leading down to the harbourside have drains, cellars and passages that rats have been using for generations.

The Victorian and Edwardian terraces and guest houses that climb the hillsides are the type of buildings where mice find plenty of ways in. The grand old hotels along the Esplanade and the smaller B&Bs on the back streets have ageing brickwork, worn window frames and cellar spaces that make them difficult to seal completely. Many of these buildings have been divided into flats or bedsits over the years and the wear from multiple occupants creates gaps. The housing estates spreading out towards Eastfield and Seamer are more modern, but still deal with mice coming in from the surrounding farmland.

Seagulls are one of the most visible pest problems in Scarborough. They nest on rooftops across the town, dive-bomb people eating outdoors and scavenge aggressively from bins and tables. The herring gulls are bold and noisy and they are protected during the nesting season, which limits what can be done without the right approach. Wasps nest in the roof spaces of the terraced houses and guest houses each summer and bed bugs turn up in some of the hotels and holiday accommodation where the turnover of guests means they can spread quickly.
