Welwyn is an attractive village in Hertfordshire, straddling the River Mimram in a gap in the hills between the A1(M) and the open countryside. The village has a handsome high street with period buildings, a church and a strong sense of community, while the housing ranges from Georgian and Victorian cottages in the village centre to interwar and more modern homes along the lanes leading outwards. The Mimram is a chalk stream, one of the rarest river types in the world and while that makes Welwyn special, the river also supports rat activity. Rats follow the river banks and the areas of rough ground along its course, moving into gardens and buildings close to the water. Properties in the lower-lying parts of the village near the river see the most call-outs.

The older houses in the village centre have the character that comes with age, but also the gaps that mice find irresistible. Mouse problems are common in the cottages along the high street and the lanes around the church, where original brickwork, timber frames and stone walls have all developed small openings over the centuries. The surrounding farmland provides a steady supply of mice looking for warmth during the colder months and once inside they nest in wall cavities, under floors and in loft spaces. Proofing the building properly is the best long-term solution.

The wooded areas around Welwyn and along the Mimram valley support grey squirrels that regularly get into the loft spaces of nearby homes. Squirrel control is a regular job in the AL6 postcode. Wasps nest in the outbuildings and older roof spaces throughout the village and wasp removal keeps us busy here through the summer. The village setting is peaceful and the river is beautiful, but they bring pest pressures that need managing and that is something we help with year-round.
