Stevenage was one of the first new towns built after the Second World War and its layout reflects that planned approach with distinct neighbourhoods separated by green spaces and a pedestrianised town centre. The housing ranges from the original 1950s and 60s estates in areas like Bedwell, Shephall and Pin Green to newer developments on the edges. After decades of use, the original new-town housing has developed the kind of wear that pests exploit. Gaps under doors, cracked airbrick covers, spaces where flat roof extensions meet the main walls and worn seals around windows all give mice a way in. We deal with mouse calls right across Stevenage and the older estate housing accounts for the majority of our work.

The green corridors and open spaces that were built into the town plan give Stevenage a pleasant feel, but they also provide routes and habitat for pests. Rats use these green strips, the railway embankments and the drainage channels that run through the town to move between areas. The playing fields, allotments and scrubby corners of land that sit between the housing estates are where we find the most rat activity, with the animals moving out into gardens from these spaces to feed on bird seed, fallen fruit and unsecured bins. The town centre itself is busy with food outlets and restaurants and the waste they generate needs careful management to stop rodents moving in.

The original old village of Stevenage still exists, centred around the High Street to the north of the new town. This part of Stevenage has period buildings with all the character and vulnerability of their age and mice and rats both find their way into these older structures more readily than the newer builds. Wasp nests are common across the whole town in summer, appearing in the roof spaces and wall cavities of the older estates and in garden sheds and fence posts on the newer developments. Squirrels are a problem in the neighbourhoods with the most mature tree cover, particularly around Fairlands Valley Park and the areas closest to the green belt.
