Letchworth Garden City holds a special place in planning history as the world's first garden city, built from 1903 with wide tree-lined streets, generous gardens and low-density housing. That original vision created a town full of mature trees, hedgerows and green spaces that make it an attractive place to live but also create ideal conditions for certain pests. The Arts and Crafts houses along Broadway and Norton Way have large loft spaces, timber detailing and mature gardens that grey squirrels treat as an open invitation. Mice are a year-round issue across the town. The generous garden plots and proximity to open farmland to the north and east mean there is a constant supply of field mice looking to move indoors when conditions outside get less favourable.
