Ware is a Hertfordshire market town on the River Lea, with a long history stretching back to Roman times and a town centre full of period buildings. The River Lea and the Lee Navigation run side by side through the heart of the town and these waterways are the biggest single factor in the local rat problem. The towpath, the river banks and the marshy ground along the Lea all provide ideal habitat and rats move freely between the water and the surrounding streets. Properties along Amwell End, the High Street and Star Street see the most activity, but the drainage network means rats can surface in properties well away from the river itself. Ware is an attractive town with a lot going for it, but the river and the age of the housing mean.
