Hextable is a village in the BR postcode area sitting between Swanley and Dartford in north-west Kent. The village has grown from a small rural settlement into a mainly residential area, with a mix of 1930s houses, post-war builds and some newer infill development. Hextable Lane and the roads running off it are lined with semi-detached and detached homes, many with good-sized gardens that back onto open ground or farmland on the edges of the village. That mix of older housing and accessible green space creates conditions where rats are regularly active. Brown rats move between the fields and hedgerows on the edges of the village and the gardens and bin stores closer in, following ditches and the backs of fences.

The inter-war houses in Hextable are solid builds but after nearly a century they have developed the kinds of gaps that mice take advantage of. Air bricks, gaps around service pipes and spaces under garage doors all provide entry points. Once mice are in the wall cavities or under suspended floors they can be hard to track down without a proper survey. The village sits close to the M25 corridor and the industrial areas around Swanley and that combination of rural edges and nearby commercial activity means pest pressures come from more than one direction.

Summer brings wasp nests in the usual spots, with loft spaces, sheds and hedge lines all providing nesting sites. The gardens in Hextable tend to be large enough to support fruit trees and well-stocked borders, which attract wasps from midsummer onward. Grey squirrels are common in the mature trees around the village and they readily move into roof spaces where trees overhang or are close to a building. Hextable has managed to keep its village feel despite being so close to the motorway and the bigger towns around it, but that semi-rural position means wildlife is always nearby.
