Hooley is a small area in the CR postcode sitting at the foot of the North Downs between Coulsdon and Merstham in Surrey. The neighbourhood straddles the A23 Brighton Road where it passes through the gap in the Downs, with residential streets on either side and the chalk escarpment rising steeply above. The mix of older houses near the main road and newer development further back creates different pest challenges. Rats follow the drainage systems and the scrubby ground along the road verges and railway embankments and the chalk downland above provides a natural habitat from which rats descend into the more sheltered valley floor. The commercial premises along the A23 contribute food waste that keeps rats in the area.

The chalk soil around Hooley drains well, but the gaps and fissures in the chalk itself can provide underground routes for rodents. Mice are common in properties of all ages here, getting in through air bricks, gaps around service entries and where older buildings have developed cracks in the brickwork. The houses nearest the Downs often see mice coming in from the grassland and scrub above, particularly through autumn and winter. The M23 and M25 motorways run close to Hooley and the embankments and verges alongside them provide undisturbed habitat for rats.

The downland above Hooley supports ground-nesting wasps in the chalk soil and above-ground nests in lofts and garden sheds are common through summer too. Grey squirrels from the woodland on the Downs get into roof spaces in the houses on the higher ground. The flea season can catch out pet owners whose dogs and cats roam the downland and pick up fleas from wildlife. Hooley sits at a busy intersection of roads and landscape and the combination of chalk downland, motorway corridors and older housing creates a pest environment with plenty of variety.
