Russell Hill is a residential area in Purley within the CR8 postcode that takes its name from the road climbing up from Purley Cross towards the higher ground. The houses here are a mix of inter-war semis and detached properties with some larger Edwardian homes nearer the top of the hill. Many of these houses have big loft spaces and mature gardens that attract a range of pests. Mice are a constant issue along Russell Hill and the surrounding streets. The older construction means there are gaps around where gas and water pipes enter properties and mice find these openings with ease. Once inside they follow the pipe runs through wall cavities and often end up in kitchens and utility rooms where warmth and food are close at hand.

The hillside position of Russell Hill means many gardens back onto sloping ground with hedges and shrubs that provide cover for rodents. Rats use these garden boundaries as travel routes and we frequently find burrow entrances along fence lines and under garden sheds. The drainage on a hillside can also be tricky because water movement puts extra stress on old clay pipes and any cracks give rats a way in from the sewer system below. Properties on the lower stretches of Russell Hill near Purley Cross are closest to the town centre drainage and that is where we see the most drain-related rat issues.

Squirrels are a problem higher up the hill where the gardens have taller and more mature trees. They access roof spaces through gaps under tiles and at the junction between the main roof and any extensions or dormers. Wasp nests are treated here every summer with south-facing soffits and fascia boards being the most likely spots. Russell Hill shares the same pest pressures as much of Purley but the sloping gardens and older housing add an extra layer of challenge for anyone trying to keep things pest-free.
