Spring Park is a quiet residential area in the CR postcode district on the border between Croydon and Bromley in south-east London. The housing is mostly interwar and post-war semis and detached homes set along leafy avenues, with Spring Park Wood and other patches of green space giving the area a suburban feel with a countryside edge. That woodland is the source of much of the pest activity we deal with here. Grey squirrels come out of the trees and into nearby gardens looking for food and from there they get into loft spaces through gaps in the soffit boards or where roof tiles have slipped. These are the routes mice use to get in and because they can squeeze through a gap as small as a pencil width, most homeowners are surprised at how they managed it. Rats use the green corridors and drainage ditches that connect Spring Park Wood to the wider landscape and we get rat calls from properties that back onto the woodland or have longer gardens with compost heaps and overgrown corners. Wasp nests appear every summer in roof spaces, under fascia boards and in garden sheds. The mix of trees and open garden space in this part of south-east London gives wasps both the nesting sites and the food supply they need to build strong colonies.
