Burton-on-Trent is a town built on brewing. The River Trent runs through the centre, the Burton Bridge crosses it and the legacy of the brewing industry is everywhere, from the old maltings and warehouses to the water that still gives Burton its fame. The river and the Trent and Mersey Canal create a pair of waterways that rats use as highways right through the heart of town. Properties along the river, near the canal and in the streets around the old brewing quarter see consistent rat activity and the aging Victorian drains under the town centre only add to the problem. The terraced streets around the town centre and the areas towards Horninglow are where mice cause the most trouble. These houses share party walls and have the kind of old buildings and drainage that gives mice easy routes between properties. A gap behind a kitchen unit, a hole around a pipe or a space under the floorboards connects one house to the next and a mouse problem in a terrace often needs a coordinated response. The newer housing estates on the edges of town, particularly where they back onto farmland towards Rolleston and Tutbury, see field mice pushing in from autumn onwards.

Wasps are a major summer call across Burton. The mix of old rooflines, industrial buildings and modern housing gives queen wasps a huge range of nesting options and wasp nests in wall cavities, soffits, garden sheds and even old brewery walls all turn up regularly. The old maltings and warehouses that have been converted into flats and offices can have pigeon problems too, with birds roosting on ledges and in open loading areas. The Trent washlands flood regularly in winter, displacing rats and other wildlife into the surrounding streets. Moles are active in the parks and gardens across the town and the general mix of waterways, old industrial buildings and dense residential housing makes Burton one of the more complex pest environments we work in across the East Midlands.
