Stourbridge is a town in the Dudley borough of the West Midlands, sitting on the western edge of the Black Country where the River Stour runs through on its way to join the Severn. The town has a strong glass-making heritage and a mix of older buildings in the centre alongside Victorian terraces, interwar housing and modern estates spreading outward through Wollaston, Pedmore and Norton. The River Stour and the Stourbridge Canal provide rats with water, cover and routes through the built-up area. We see rat activity along the river corridor, around the canal towpath and in the gardens and outbuildings of properties close to these waterways. The old industrial sites that dot the Stour valley, some redeveloped and some still rough ground, also provide rats with shelter and food.

The terraced housing through the older parts of Stourbridge and into the surrounding areas shares party walls and mice move between properties through gaps in those shared walls and around pipework without much difficulty. The Victorian drains beneath these older streets can be in variable condition and cracked or broken pipes give rats a route up from the sewers into gardens and ground floors. The town centre around the High Street and Market Street has a good mix of food outlets and the waste from these businesses needs careful management to stop rodents moving in.

Further out into the more suburban parts of Stourbridge at Pedmore, Norton and Oldswinford, the housing is more spacious and the pest pressures change. Larger gardens and mature trees bring squirrel problems, with grey squirrels getting into loft spaces from overhanging branches. Wasp nests are a summer constant across the town, from the terraces in the centre to the detached homes on the edges, turning up in roof spaces, wall cavities and garden sheds throughout the season.
