Cockfosters sits at the very end of the Piccadilly line, right on the border between Enfield and Hertfordshire and it has the feel of a comfortable north London suburb with a hint of countryside just beyond. Trent Park stretches out to the north and west, a large area of woodland, grassland and lakes that was once part of a grand estate and is now open to the public. That green space is lovely for residents but it also supports a healthy population of grey squirrels, foxes and other wildlife that regularly spills over into the streets around Cockfosters Road, Chalk Lane and Bramley Road. Squirrel control is one of the most common pest calls we get from this area, with squirrels entering loft spaces through gaps at the roofline and causing damage once inside.

The housing around Cockfosters is predominantly 1930s semi-detached and detached homes, many with original features that create natural weak points for pest entry. Gaps behind fascia boards, old airbricks and spaces around soil pipes are all routes that mice use to get indoors during autumn and winter. Mouse control is a steady part of our work here. The streets closer to the station and the parade of shops along Cockfosters Road occasionally see rat activity too, usually connected to the drainage system that serves the older commercial properties. Cracked drains beneath these buildings can give rats a direct path from the sewers into ground-floor walls and voids.

During the summer months, wasp nests are found in the usual spots across Cockfosters: garden sheds, garage roofs, beneath tiles and in loft spaces. The mature gardens that back onto Trent Park are particularly prone because there is so much undisturbed greenery for queens to choose from in spring. The park itself also means that rat activity can track along the wooded edges and into properties on the park boundary, especially where garden fences are old or where there are gaps in walls at ground level.
