Pest Control in Ducks Island

Ducks Island is a small residential area within Barnet, sitting close to the junction of Barnet Road and Galley Lane. It takes its name from the old village pond that once stood here and while the pond may be long gone the area retains a quiet, tucked-away character compared to the busier parts of High Barnet just to the south. The houses are a mix of inter-war and post-war builds, with some larger properties on generous plots alongside more modest semi-detached homes. Gardens are a good size on the whole and many have mature trees and hedging that give the area its green, pleasant feel.

That greenery does come with pest considerations. Grey squirrels are common, using the garden trees as a base from which to explore roof spaces. Once squirrels get into a loft they can cause damage quickly, gnawing at timbers, pulling apart insulation and chewing through wiring. Squirrel control is something we handle regularly in areas like this. Mice are another steady issue, moving into properties through gaps around pipework, beneath fascia boards and through worn airbricks as the weather cools. The proximity to green belt land on the fringes of Barnet means field mice as well as house mice can turn up in homes here. Mouse control calls tend to peak between October and March.

In summer, wasp nests are a regular feature across Ducks Island, with the sheltered eaves and garden sheds that come with these older suburban homes providing ideal spots for colonies to develop. The area is quiet enough that nests can grow unnoticed until they become a nuisance. Rats are less frequent here than in some parts of the EN postcode but they do turn up, usually tracking along garden boundaries and fence lines from nearby open land.
