High Barnet sits at the northern edge of London in the EN postcode area, on the ridge where the Great North Road crests the hill before heading out into Hertfordshire. The High Street runs along the top of the ridge with a mix of shops, pubs and period buildings and the residential streets drop away to the east and west. The railway cutting through High Barnet provides another corridor for rats and foxes to move through the area without being seen.

Grey squirrels are common across High Barnet thanks to the mature trees in gardens and on the common. Squirrel entry into lofts is a frequent complaint, particularly in the larger houses where the roofline is surrounded by trees. Wasps nest in loft spaces, garden sheds and under eaves every summer and the hilltop position and sheltered gardens seem to encourage them. High Barnet has the feel of a proper small town on London's edge, but the closeness of the green belt and the age of many of the buildings mean pest control is a regular part of life here.
