Rye Park is a residential area in Hoddesdon, sitting on the eastern side of the town close to the Lea Valley and the Rye House area. The housing is mainly post-war, with rows of semi-detached and terraced houses built during the expansion of Hoddesdon in the 1950s and 1960s. The area takes its name from the historic Rye House nearby and the proximity to the River Lea and the Rye Meads nature reserve shapes much of the pest activity here. Brown rats follow the river banks and drainage channels from the valley floor into the residential streets and rat control is a regular part of our work in this area.

The post-war housing in Rye Park has the construction features typical of its era: cavity walls, concrete airbricks, flat-roofed garage extensions and PVC-clad fascia boards. As these elements age, they develop gaps and weaknesses that mice can exploit. Cavity walls can channel mice from ground level up into loft spaces and gaps around service entries and beneath poorly maintained fascia boards are other common routes. Mouse control keeps us busy through the colder months and good proofing is the key to preventing repeat problems.

The green spaces at Rye House Marsh and the wider Lea Valley create a lovely natural environment for residents but also bring wildlife closer to the doorstep than in more urban settings. During summer, wasp nests are common across the estate, with the flat-roofed garages and garden sheds providing sheltered spots for colonies to build. The damp conditions near the valley floor can also attract ground-dwelling insects into lower rooms of properties. Rye Park is a pleasant area with good green space nearby and staying on top of pest issues keeps it that way.
