Pest Control in Millom

Millom is a small town on the south-western tip of the Lake District, sitting between the Duddon Estuary and the Irish Sea coast. The town grew up around the iron and steel works and while the industry is long gone, the streets of terraced housing built for the workers remain. Those terraces, along with the older buildings in the town centre around the market square, create a familiar set of pest conditions. Rats are common in Millom, drawn by the old drainage under the terraced streets and the food waste from the shops and takeaways in the centre. The Duddon Estuary to the north and the shore to the west provide additional rat habitat and they move between the shoreline and the town along watercourses and drains. Mice are a ongoing problem in the terraced streets, where shared walls let them move between properties. The older houses have gaps around pipes, under doors and in crumbling mortar that give mice easy entry and once they are in the wall cavities they are hard to pin down without proofing the routes they use. The newer houses on the edges of town are better built but still see mice coming in from the surrounding farmland, especially in the colder months.

Millom's coastal position brings gull problems. Herring gulls and lesser black-backed gulls nest on rooftops in the centre and their noise and aggressive behaviour during the breeding season are a real annoyance. Wasps nest in the older buildings each summer and the damp maritime climate encourages insects like woodlice and silverfish into homes.
