Rochester is one of the Medway Towns, sitting on the south bank of the River Medway with its Norman castle and cathedral dominating the skyline. The old High Street runs through the centre lined with period buildings and the residential areas spread out from there across Strood to the north, Borstal to the south and up towards Frindsbury. The river is a big part of the pest picture here. Rats thrive along the Medway, using the mudflats, wharves and riverbanks for shelter and food. The newer housing towards Hoo Peninsula and the developments along the waterfront have fewer structural issues, but still deal with mice from time to time.

Wasps build nests in the rooflines and wall cavities of properties across Rochester every summer and the parks and gardens dotted around the town keep them well fed. Pigeons roost on the ledges and stonework of the castle and cathedral and on the older commercial buildings, creating fouling problems below. Bed bugs can show up in the hotels and guest houses along the High Street that cater to the tourists visiting the Dickens heritage sites. Seagulls are bold along the waterfront too, nesting on flat roofs and scavenging from bins and outdoor eating areas.
