Sheerness sits at the north-west tip of the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, a town shaped by its naval dockyard history and its position at the meeting of the Thames and the Medway. The old dockyard buildings, the terraced streets of Blue Town and the more modern housing across Mile Town and Marine Town give the town a varied character. The sea, the harbour and the old dock basins mean rats have always been part of life here. They live along the shoreline, around the harbour walls and in the drains beneath the older streets. The terraced housing in Blue Town and the streets around the High Street have shared back alleys and old drainage that rats travel through.

The Victorian terraces and converted dockyard buildings have walls, windows and floors with the kind of gaps that mice exploit. The food outlets along the High Street and around the seafront generate waste that supports rodent numbers in the centre. The newer housing spreading east towards Minster deals with mice too, though the properties tend to be better sealed. The exposed coastal location and the sea breezes mean pests look for sheltered spots to nest and breed.

Seagulls are one of the most obvious pest issues in Sheerness. They nest on the flat rooftops of the commercial buildings and on the older housing, diving for food around the shops and seafront and creating noise and mess. Wasps nest in the roof spaces and wall cavities of properties across the town each summer. The damp coastal conditions can attract moisture-loving pests into ground-floor rooms and bed bugs occasionally show up in the guest houses and holiday accommodation.
