Chorley is a Lancashire market town sitting between the flat farmland of the West Lancashire plain and the moorland edge of the West Pennine Moors. The River Yarrow and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal both run through the town and these waterways bring rats into the residential and commercial areas from the surrounding countryside. The canal towpath through Chorley is popular with walkers but the banks provide cover for rats and properties along the streets nearest the canal at places like Bolton Street and Eaves Lane see the most activity. The River Yarrow and the Chor Brook add further water corridors that rats follow into the town.

The town centre around the Market Street area, the covered market and the flat iron market has a good mix of older stone and brick buildings. The terraced streets radiating out from the centre were built for the cotton mill workers and these tightly packed rows share drains and party walls that let mouse and rat problems travel between properties. The older houses have stone foundations and brick walls with mortar that has been wearing away for over a century and mice find entry through the gaps. The newer housing at Buckshaw Village, built on the former Royal Ordnance factory site, brings modern construction with cavity walls that mice exploit through air bricks and service entries.

The green spaces at Astley Park and Yarrow Valley Park are attractive features of the town but they support grey squirrels, field mice and other wildlife that can move into nearby homes. The farmland to the west and the moorland to the east both contribute to the pest pressure on the town, with agricultural rodents moving in from the farms and moorland wildlife coming down from the hills in winter. Wasp nests are common across Chorley through summer in roof spaces, cavity walls and garden sheds and the Lancashire climate means wasps tend to be active from June through September.
