Dronfield is a small Derbyshire town sitting between Sheffield and Chesterfield, perched in a valley with the Peak District not far to the west. The town has a historic core of stone buildings around the church and high street, surrounded by residential estates from the 1960s onwards and some newer developments on the edges. The River Drone runs through the centre and this watercourse plays a part in the local pest picture. Rats follow the river and the associated drainage system and properties near the water or on the older streets are the most likely to see rat activity. The commercial premises along the high street add to the problem by providing food waste that draws rats in from the riverside.

Mice are common across all types of housing in Dronfield. The older stone properties in the centre have the thick walls and deep window reveals that look great but develop gaps in their pointing over time and mice use these gaps without hesitation. The newer estates are generally better sealed but still see problems where there are gaps around service entries and where the ground level is close to air bricks. Mouse control is a steady job here, peaking in the autumn and winter months. The surrounding countryside, with its mix of farmland and moorland edge, brings field mice and rats into the estates on the edge of town.

Wasp nests are common during summer across all types of housing, found in loft spaces, under the stone eaves of the older buildings and in garden sheds.
