The terraced streets with their shared walls, back alleys and old Victorian drains are classic rat territory and the density of food businesses across areas like Peckham, Lewisham and Woolwich creates a constant food supply.

The sheer age of much of the housing means mice have plenty of ways in. Crumbling brickwork, worn sash windows, gaps around pipes and the floor voids in the old terraces all let them travel through properties and between adjoining houses. The converted houses that have been split into flats are especially tricky, because mice move through the shared structure between units. The newer estates and regeneration areas at places like the Greenwich Peninsula and Deptford Creek have better construction, but the surrounding older streets mean mice and rats are never far away.

Wasps nest in the roof spaces and wall cavities of houses across south-east London every summer and the many parks from Greenwich to Crystal Palace provide foraging. Bed bugs are a growing issue in the rental properties, hotels and hostels across the area, spreading through shared buildings and carried between properties on luggage and clothing. Pigeons roost on commercial buildings and on the older blocks of flats and foxes are a familiar sight at night across virtually every street in south-east London.
